Historically, the constraint of dominant concern has been the metaphysical constraint of determinism. The opposing positions within that debate are metaphysical libertarianism, the claim that determinism is false and thus that free will exists; and hard determinism, the claim that determinism is true and thus that free will does not exist. Both of these positions, which agree that causal determination is the relevant factor in the question of free will, are classed as incompatibilists. Those who deny that determinism is relevant are classified as compatibilists, and offer various alternative explanations of what constraints are relevant, such as physical constraints (e.g. chains or imprisonment), social constraints (e.g. threat of punishment or censure), or psychological constraints (e.g. compulsions or phobias). The principle of free will has religious, ethical, and scientific implications. For example, in the religious realm, free will implies that an omnipotent divinity does not assert its power over individual will and choices. In ethics, it may hold implications regarding whether individuals can be held morally accountable for their actions. The question of free will has been a central issue since the beginning of philosophical thought. From Wikipedia under the

Does the idea of "destiny" cancel out free will? Asked by unknown - Wed Feb 17 13:39:26 2010 - - 17 Answers - 1 Comments A. He had a predetermined destiny so he really didn't have free will because he was being guided by God. Answered by Just a Dream - Wed Feb 17 13:43:44 2010 What about causality makes free will impossible? Q. What about the choice having been caused rules out free will? What is it about free will that necessitates acausality? How do you get from "actions preceding a choice cause that choice" to "choices are predetermined"? Asked by Corollary - Tue May 4 00:41:37 2010 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. Your argument is called the "contra-causal" argument. Those who vociferously defend it claim that we do refute it actually prove it. Nothing is more false than the contra-causal argument, because it means one would have to be the "prime mover", the "cause of causes", the first cause. Those who defend your position say we cannot be the first cause, or we would be removed from empirical reality and its rules. We agree. Since that is not only impossible by violating all rules of existence, we say it is a straw argument. We do not claim to be prime movers. We only claim that being caused to use our will is the rule of existence; and further, that once we are forced to use it, we can choose what ever is in our minds (and each mind may have… [cont.] Answered by Ardi Pithecus - Tue May 4 07:49:08 2010 will I automatically start being charged after my free trial ends with adobe photoshop cs4?
