Free will raises the question whether, and in what sense, rational agents exercise control over their actions, decisions, or choices. Addressing this question requires understanding the relationship between freedom and cause, and determining whether the laws of nature are causally deterministic. The various philosophical positions taken differ on whether all events are determined or not — determinism versus indeterminism — and also on whether freedom can coexist with determinism or not — compatibilism versus incompatibilism. So, for instance, 'hard determinists' are incompatibilists who argue that the universe is deterministic, and that this makes free will impossible.

Metaphysical libertarians are also incompatibilists. They believe that free will exists and strict causal determinism is false. Their problem is to reconcile free will with chance or indeterminism, which threatens to make actions random.

The principle of free will has religious, ethical, and scientific implications. For example, in the religious realm, free will implies that an omnipotent divinity does not assert its power over individual will and choices. In ethics, it implies that individuals can be held morally accountable for their actions. The question of free will has been a central issue since the beginning of philosophical thought.

Why do the religious tout the greatness of god granted free will yet remove it during the indoctrination?
Q. process? Their kids don't have free will. What if the christian kid exercised his free will and chose to not believe in god or to become Buddhist, Muslim jew whatever? Would the parents respect the child's free will or forcefully indoctrinate the child into their belief?

A. During indoctrination? What??? They are doing it to ALL of us. They don't want other religions recognized by anyone. Gay people can't get married because of their religious ideas. There are tons of ways "free will" is being pushed to the side in favor of their personal ideals. As for the kids who chose a different path, that would depend on the parents.

How can you have free will and an all knowing God? Determined future exists?
Q. I've heard the argument about how God "knows" what kind of decision you will make, so he doesn't force you to choose anything. But that argument fails because if God knows what choice you will make then he knows the future. And if he knows the future, then the future is determined. I can't see how you have free will but still believe in a all knowing God. Am I missing something to this argument?

A. No you are not missing anything. Libraries of books have been written on this subject by some very notable biblical scholars but still the debate goes on. My view goes something like this: I own a dog, he is usually very well behaved and most of the time he does what I tell him. But if a rabbit enters our yard I know exactly what he will do. I don't make him chase the rabbit but it is in his nature to do so. Now take our relationship with God. In any given situation God knows what we will do, before we do, because he understands our nature. He doesn't make us do it. The thing that will make the difference is for us to change our nature, and to begin to make choices in a more God oriented way. This can be a very gradual process with… [cont.]
