What does a high platelet count mean?
Q. I have been donating platelets for three years. My count has always been high (the lowest was around 350,000). Today when I went, my platelet count was 453,000. Platelet donors over 450,000 get deferred from donating again for four weeks. Is my count too high? Does this mean I should get checked out for some kind of disorder? Is it possible for my body to produce more platelets b/c I donate about every two weeks and it is anticipating the need?

A. First of all, a high platelet count is known as thrombocytosis. It can be caused by many different reasons such as an infection, inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and other conditions like chronic myelogenous leukemia, Hyposplenism, Hemorrhage and/or iron deficiency. Your platelet count is just out of the normal range of 150,000 and 450,000 per mm (or micro litre) and it's important to note that deviation does not necessary imply any form of disease, but I would recommend getting this checked with your doctor. To put it in laymens terms, high platelets create thicker blood. If you have too many platelets (750,000 or 1,000,000) you have a much higher risk of blood clotting conditions like Thrombosis. I would recommend getting… [cont.]

Does anyone know of any holistic approaches to reducing an abnormally high blood platelet count?
Q. My boyfriend has recently been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) characterized by an abnormally high platelet count. This puts him at high risk of blood clots and strokes. It is also possible that it could develop into Leukemia. His doctor has placed him on a platelet reducing medication but he is suffering side effects of constant headaches and nausea. His mood is really depressed as well because of his constant malaise. We've already asked if there are other medications that he could try but were told that the side effects of the other medications included cancer! I know that headaches and nausea are preferable to the risks he faces if he were not on the medication (or if he were on other medications!) but I was… [cont.]

A. I have the same problem - I was told to eliminate stress and pressure, and to try to live as healthily as possible - eating right and exercising. I was also told to try yoga and meditation to reduce stess levels in my body. Because I have lots of different health issues, it seems to be weakening my body, so at the same time it's trying to get better, but in the wrong way. My mother had cancer three times, and nearly died from radio therapy. She concentrated on eliminating the stress in her life and really looked after herself. She's alive today so that's what I'm basing my treatment on. Also, my mother started me on a therapy called Bain-Derivative Therapy. It sounds weird and I have to admit I haven't really perservered with it, but my… [cont.]

Q. What does it mean to have a high Platelet count while pregnant and what are the risks? Thanks.

A. During pregnancy you have so much extra blood flowing through your body that a high (or low) count does not necessarily mean anything. With my last pregnancy, my GP was so concerned with the level my count was at that she called a specialist who told her not to worry about it and just test it again 6 weeks after birth. They did check it after birth and it was within normal range again. Don't worry unless the doctor says to.

A. Hi, It was discovered in 1932 that cancer is killed at 8.5 PH and can only reproduce below 7.0 PH. Your body could be neutral, acidic or non-acidic. If you have cancer, then it MUST be acidic, and the cancer cells make it more acidic. 7.0 is neutral on the acidic scale, while more acidic is a lower number and a higher number is more alkaline. Do a search on "Killing cancer with high PH therapy" and Cure Cancer with 9.5 Kangen water. You can start to kill the cancer by drinking 8.5 PH water for at least a week, then switch to 9.0 PH water. This will help not overload your kidneys with to many dead cells that need to be flushed from your body. Your doctors will be surprised with the improvement in your health. Alkaline water… [cont.]

A. You need to see a hematologist. This can be normal, in which case is called reactive,or can be a condition. depending on the siteation, you can take a medicine that slows down the production of platlets in your body or you can just take aspirin to prevent blood clots.

if i have high count of platelet in the blood, should I donate platelet?
Q. would i be doing a good thing for myself and other people? or only people with normal count can donate?
Asked by jean - Tue Feb 27 10:12:56 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. here's how it works: when you arrive to donate platelets, you are screened. this process will vary by state, county, city, etc. at the very least, you'll be asked some questions to make sure you're eligible to donate. your blood pressure and temperature will be taken, and then a staff person will prick your finger. this blood sample will be used to test you for hiv, west nile, and to measure your counts. healthy people should have platelet counts around 150 or higher. there is no top level; i've been as high as 350. the higher your counts are, the more you can donate (1, 2, or 3 units, which are about 250 ccs each), and the quicker it will be. this also depends on variables like your size (i have high counts and weigh about 195… [cont.]

High platelet count?
Q. I recently had a blood test which showed my platelet count as high. A 2nd recent test showed it had increased again to 730,000. I have been referred to a haematologist. What is the likliest explanation?
Asked by yorkshirecath2004 - Wed Dec 6 11:47:30 2006 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. There are two reasons: 1) Your bone marrow is producing more platelets than it should 2) Your spleen is not removing as many platelets as it should Either one could be the reason but only your haematologist will be able to tell you why your PLT count is so high. They will want to treat it so as to remove risk of unnecessary blood clotting as it is the platelets that stem bleeding when you have an injury. And the normal range for platelets is around 150 million and 450 million per ml of blood.

does anyone have high platelet count that is NOT correlated with a leukemia and/or other bone marrow diseases?
Q. my hematologist said i might have essential thrombocythemia (a myeloproliferative disorder), but my allergist says that many young patients have moderately high platelet levels (mine is 628, although it's been increasing for a few years). i've had really bad allergies since I was kid, especially since moving to TX, so could that be elevating the platelets? i don't see my hematologist again until next week, so i'm looking for a heads up.

A. Generally don't worry about it unless it gets over 450,000. Platelet counts can very quite a bit and can be elevated by stresses on your body such as trauma, surgery, infections, and bleeding(menses among others). If you are in good health a tatoo is probably ok.

A. Christistheway!!!, A high platelet count the normal count is usually between 150,000 to 400,000/mm3 - is known as Thrombocytosis, which is a blood disorder in which the body produces a surplus of platelets - thrombocytes. It has been described in infants with Down Syndrome, which usually occurs between 6 weeks and one year. It has also been noted in infants with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The patients with CAH are noted to have normal haemoglobin, haematocrit, and red blood cell counts while having significantly elevated white blood cell and platelet counts. The exact mechanism is unknown, if CAH should be diagnosed, then there is be a possibility that her previous kidney infection may have a bearing, because it is possibly… [cont.]

A. It could mean an infection, cancer (not to scare you), leukemia, either way his body is producing more white blood cells because it has a battle on it's hands somewhere, be it small or large. That is what they are going to determine when he goes to see them. Probably nothing serious it's just the worst case senerio. It could just mean he has bronchitis, or an on going sinus infection.

A. High red blood cell and platlete counts can be high for quite a few different reasons and since I do not know anything specific about your situation and can't say why but a high blood cell count is almost always indicative of an infection (white blood cells are the warriors of the immune system-if there is a threat then there are usually more of them). Good luck.

Asked by massslave - Sat Jul 28 00:33:01 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It means you have a higher clotting time. Your blood clots faster after an injury than normal. You may run a risk of blood clots, which usually only occur after trauma (surgery). Your MD might put you on a blood thinner, but the cause may also be a problem with your spleen. Natikinase will help (can be found at any health food store).
