Does a high platelet count and vomiting related to a probable cerebral aneurysm?
Q. I was just recently discharged from the hospital due to a migraine attack coupled with vomiting. A day later, and I'm still throwing up, still having a massive headache (pressure's kind of like something is pushing behind your eye). My CBC result showed a high platelet count. 54,100 platelets more than the highest normal platelet count. I don't know what these things mean. Could someone help me out? Please...

What does a high platelet count mean?
Q. I have been donating platelets for three years. My count has always been high (the lowest was around 350,000). Today when I went, my platelet count was 453,000. Platelet donors over 450,000 get deferred from donating again for four weeks. Is my count too high? Does this mean I should get checked out for some kind of disorder? Is it possible for my body to produce more platelets b/c I donate about every two weeks and it is anticipating the need?

A. First of all, a high platelet count is known as thrombocytosis. It can be caused by many different reasons such as an infection, inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and other conditions like chronic myelogenous leukemia, Hyposplenism, Hemorrhage and/or iron deficiency. Your platelet count is just out of the normal range of 150,000 and 450,000 per mm (or micro litre) and it's important to note that deviation does not necessary imply any form of disease, but I would recommend getting this checked with your doctor. To put it in laymens terms, high platelets create thicker blood. If you have too many platelets (750,000 or 1,000,000) you have a much higher risk of blood clotting conditions like Thrombosis. I would recommend getting… [cont.]

What causes high platelet count (525 or so) and low white blood cell count (don t know the number)?
Q. I have a high platelet count and low WBC count. Any ideas?
Asked by JennaH - Fri Feb 8 12:37:49 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually if one type of cell count is high, another is low, since the proportions of both cell types in the blood sample change if there is a change in either cell type. In your case, the white blood cells may appear low simply because the blood volume that would normally contain more white blood cells is occupied by platelets. If your white blood cell count is just slightly below normal, then its a safe bet that the aberration is due to the platelet count. High platelet counts often occur without any apparent reason (called essential thrombocythemia), but they can also occur from conditions like polycythemia vera or myelogenous leukemia - docs often check for signs of these other possible causes after finding a high platelet count. … [cont.]

A. A high platelet count is known as thrombocytosis. Most of the time, thrombocytosis itself is pretty benign (so nothing to worry about). But, what is actually more important is the factor that is causing the high platelet count (which should be checked by your doctor). Platelets are components of blood (they are what causes blood clotting), and will not adversely affect other parts of your body (besides the rare chance of getting a thromboembolism).

A. There are a host of reasons why you might have high platelets. You are seeing a hematologist to make sure you don't have leukemia or myelodysplasia. This link gives a list of additional possibilities. A hematologist will do a complete physical, run a bunch of blood tests and then either do additional testing, give you a diagnosis or refer you to another specialist. good luck

A. Smoking can not increase the platelet count. There are several studies proved the effect of smoking on the function of platelets in our blood.Based on the studies, it is found that, smoking causes aggregation of platelets, causing them to form clots within the blood vessels. The effect is quite serious--Heart attack and stroke. Hope, it helps. Regards,

A. You need to see a hematologist. This can be normal, in which case is called reactive,or can be a condition. depending on the siteation, you can take a medicine that slows down the production of platlets in your body or you can just take aspirin to prevent blood clots.

Q. would i be doing a good thing for myself and other people? or only people with normal count can donate?
Asked by jean - Tue Feb 27 10:12:56 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. here's how it works: when you arrive to donate platelets, you are screened. this process will vary by state, county, city, etc. at the very least, you'll be asked some questions to make sure you're eligible to donate. your blood pressure and temperature will be taken, and then a staff person will prick your finger. this blood sample will be used to test you for hiv, west nile, and to measure your counts. healthy people should have platelet counts around 150 or higher. there is no top level; i've been as high as 350. the higher your counts are, the more you can donate (1, 2, or 3 units, which are about 250 ccs each), and the quicker it will be. this also depends on variables like your size (i have high counts and weigh about 195… [cont.]

High platelet count?
Q. I recently had a blood test which showed my platelet count as high. A 2nd recent test showed it had increased again to 730,000. I have been referred to a haematologist. What is the likliest explanation?
Asked by yorkshirecath2004 - Wed Dec 6 11:47:30 2006 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. There are two reasons: 1) Your bone marrow is producing more platelets than it should 2) Your spleen is not removing as many platelets as it should Either one could be the reason but only your haematologist will be able to tell you why your PLT count is so high. They will want to treat it so as to remove risk of unnecessary blood clotting as it is the platelets that stem bleeding when you have an injury. And the normal range for platelets is around 150 million and 450 million per ml of blood.

does anyone have high platelet count that is NOT correlated with a leukemia and/or other bone marrow diseases?
Q. my hematologist said i might have essential thrombocythemia (a myeloproliferative disorder), but my allergist says that many young patients have moderately high platelet levels (mine is 628, although it's been increasing for a few years). i've had really bad allergies since I was kid, especially since moving to TX, so could that be elevating the platelets? i don't see my hematologist again until next week, so i'm looking for a heads up.

High Platelet count and high rate of sedimentation - what does this mean?

Just got blood results back and can't seem my doc until next week so I though there just be some brainiacs on yahoo who could help me! I have been suffering from intense pain, swollen burning joints, back knees hands feet and am on exycontin40mg 2x daily for pain management. I asked the doc to de,d me for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis blood test - everything normal except the Platelet count (408) and rate of sedimentation 44 first hour, 76 second hour. Thanks for your help guys!!!
Asked by momentary997 - Sat Apr 4 09:28:34 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your platelet count is in an average range actually and I don't believe there is anything to be worried about there. Your Sed. rate, however, is your body's response to pain/swelling/inflammatio n. When inflammation is present in the body, certain proteins cause red blood cells to stick together and fall more quickly than normal to the bottom of the test tube. These proteins are produced by the liver and the immune system under many abnormal conditions, such as an infection, an autoimmune disease, or cancer. Do not panic. There are many reasons for a higher rate of sedimentation and it's most likely not as bad as it sounds. Your doctor will know exactly what to do when you talk to him next week.

When is a high platelet count dangerous?
Q. I went to my doctor to get tested for Celiac's disease and he ran a test on my blood. when the doctors office called and said i didn't have celiac's disease we decided that i wouldn't go back to the doctor and a few weeks later we received a copy of the tests that he ran and in one of them it showed that i have a platelet count of 471 when the normal range is in betweenn 100 and 400. the test also showed that i have celiac's disease or am really likely to have it. so, i am not too happy with my doctor when he obviously didn't look at the test results. which gets back to my question. Is having a platelet count of 471 high enough to bring to the attention of a doctor?
Asked by Cami - Thu Jul 16 23:24:29 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Iron deficiency can be a cause and so also bone marrow problems. Underactive spleen as in celiac disease, certain inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis too give a similar picture. You need to consult a hematologist.

A. Christistheway!!!, A high platelet count the normal count is usually between 150,000 to 400,000/mm3 - is known as Thrombocytosis, which is a blood disorder in which the body produces a surplus of platelets - thrombocytes. It has been described in infants with Down Syndrome, which usually occurs between 6 weeks and one year. It has also been noted in infants with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The patients with CAH are noted to have normal haemoglobin, haematocrit, and red blood cell counts while having significantly elevated white blood cell and platelet counts. The exact mechanism is unknown, if CAH should be diagnosed, then there is be a possibility that her previous kidney infection may have a bearing, because it is possibly… [cont.]

A. High red blood cell and platlete counts can be high for quite a few different reasons and since I do not know anything specific about your situation and can't say why but a high blood cell count is almost always indicative of an infection (white blood cells are the warriors of the immune system-if there is a threat then there are usually more of them). Good luck.
