Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that investigates principles of reality transcending those of any particular science. Cosmology and ontology are traditional branches of metaphysics. It is concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world. Someone who studies metaphysics would be called either a "metaphysician" or a "metaphysicist."

The word derives from the Greek words μετά (metá) (meaning "beyond" or "after") and φυσικά (physiká) (meaning "physical"), "physical" referring to those works on matter by Aristotle in antiquity. The prefix meta- ("beyond") was attached to the chapters in Aristotle's work that physically followed after the chapters on "physics," in posthumously edited collections. Aristotle himself did not call these works Metaphysics. Aristotle called some of the subjects treated there "first philosophy."

A central branch of metaphysics is ontology, the investigation into what types of things there are in the world and what relations these things bear to one another. The metaphysician also attempts to clarify the notions by which people understand the world, including existence, objecthood, property, space, time, causality, and possibility.

Before the development of modern science, scientific questions were addressed as a part of metaphysics known as "natural philosophy"; the term "science" itself meant "knowledge" of epistemological origin. The scientific method, however, made natural philosophy an empirical and experimental activity unlike the rest of philosophy, and by the end of the eighteenth century it had begun to be called "science" in order to distinguish it from philosophy. Thereafter, metaphysics became the philosophical enquiry of a non-empirical character into the nature of existence.

Why is it that many don't believe that you have great faith in Jesus and still want to study metaphysics?
Q. I find that most people scoff at me when I say I have a great relationship with Jesus, but I study metaphysics. I believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy spirit. I also believe that God can and does communicate with us through spirits and apparitions. I have great faith in prayer, and also in meditation. However, it seems to me that the two are just not allowed to coincide. Why is that?

A. It's a prejudice that if you are involved in science then you can't be religious. After all, the two are pushed as being exclusive. They're not. But some people see them as exclusive.

Can studying Metaphysics and ancient philosphy warp your mind?
Q. That stuff is pretty deep ya know? Can studying it extensively cause one to question life, the world and such in such a deep manner that it causes said one to become reclusive? What do you think? Have you experienced this before? Of course their is nothing wrong with occassional deep thinking, but can some people take it too far?

A. yes, when I was in my teens, I first discovered nature way of saying hello. I put my headphones on and listen to pink floyd and drew pictures for months. Some of the best days of my youth, exploring my inner self. But a time came to leave the house, literally, I was out of Pepsi and sweet tarts.

What's the difference between MULTIVERSE theory in cosmology and MODAL REALISM in metaphysics?
Q. People insists they are different, but I don't really see why they can't be reduced to one another.

A. they are different. in modal realism the six central doctrines about possible worlds are: 1. Possible worlds exist they are just as real as our world; 2. Possible worlds are the same sort of things as our world they differ in content, not in kind; 3. Possible worlds cannot be reduced to something more basic they are irreducible entities in their own right. 4. "Actual" is indexical. When we distinguish our world from others by claiming that it alone is actual, we mean only that it is ours we live here. 5. Possible worlds are unified by the spatiotemporal interrelations of their parts; possible worlds are spatiotemporally isolated from each other. 6. Possible worlds are causally isolated from each other. but in… [cont.]

  • Now these two questions — Does there exist a material reality distinct from sensible appearances? and What is the nature of reality? — do not have their source in experimental method, which is acquainted only with sensible appearances and can discover nothing beyond them. The resolution of these questions transcends the methods used by physics; it is the object of metaphysics. Therefore, if the aim of physical theories is to explain experimental laws, theoretical physics is not an autonomous science; it is subordinate to metaphysics.
