Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing fundamental questions (such as mysticism, myth, or the arts) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word "philosophy" comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία (philosophia), which literally means "love of wisdom".

What is a good essay topic to write about in philosophy?
Q. I am kind of stumped of what I would like to write about. Im interested in more of the Greek mythology subjects of philosophy. The topic is supposed to be about the enduring problems of philosophy but he said he is fine with any topic related to philosophy. Any idea's would be much appreciated. Thank you! Can you elaborate about the riddle and truth?

A. You should talk about the Philosophy of the riddle/of truth... Consider Plato's allegory of the cave and what it is to be a perceived form and a real form - consider this in determining the answer to a riddle... Incorporate Oedipus and the riddle of the Sphinx. This could be a very interesting and impressive Philosophical essay.

If philosophy start as the first knowledge dating back at the time of ancient?
Q. and, why philosophy then is next to science, the fact is knowledge start all at philosophy.
Asked by Benito V - Fri Oct 5 02:13:48 2007 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Knowledge existed hundreds of years before philosophy. Philosophy did not start at the first knowledge, it started at the first knowledge of wisdom. Science is not discovery, it is the method behind discovery. Discovery alone requires knowledge...the method to classify it requires wisdom, this is why science was founded after the origin and rise of philosophy. Knowledge has expanded exponentially at a shocking pace over the last 3 thousand years. Yet, the wisest amongst us know that all of knowledge is based on a foundation of wisdom...a foundation of the one true kernel of knowledge...the wisest all know that all we know is that we know nothing.

What would a good topic for a philosophy thesis be?
Q. I am going into my senior year of college and I need to write senior thesis for my philosophy major. I am most interested in political philosophy, logic, logical positivism, and ethics. I am planning on either going to law school or graduate school for economics so a topic that could compliment either of these paths would be great! Thanks for the input!

A. Perhaps something like the inherent conflict between governance and freedom or between justice and mercy.

Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers:

  • The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.
  • Philosophy is not the owl of Minerva that takes flight after history has been realized in order to celebrate its happy ending; rather, philosophy is subjective proposition, desire, and praxis that are applied to the event.
  • What characterizes philosophy is this "step back" from actuality into possibility—the attitude best rendered by Adorno's and Horkheimer's motto quoted by Fredric Jameson: "Not Italy itself is given here, but the proof that it exists."
  • "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is – i.e. he must know his own nature (including his means of knowledge) and the nature of the universe in which he acts – i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance."
    • Ayn Rand, "Philosophy, who needs it?".
