What does Beowulf teach us about the culture that existed during the time in which it was written?
Q. What does Beowulf teach us about the culture that existed during the time in which Beowulf was written? I know Beowulf was written in the Anglo-Saxon period, but that's about it... Also, a few other questions: What is Beowulf? What are the origins of Beowulf? Thanks!

A. It shows that the culture was beginning to show signs of Christianity (constant references to a single God), but still had trouble letting go of the ingrained paganistic/materialistic values. Examples of Christianity: - Beowulf is Christ-like figure who dies to save his people - Divine intervention (Deus ex machina) that constantly saves Beo, such as the random appearances of swords at crucial times Paganism/materialism: - Grendel's arm as a trophy - Burial ritual with gold/weaponry - building of Meade Hall I would say more but I can't seem to remember all the examples off the top of my head. Good luck with whatever you're doing.
