The term feminism can be used to describe a political, cultural or economic movement aimed at establishing equal rights and legal protection for women. Feminism involves political, cultural and sociological theories, as well as philosophies concerned with issues of gender difference. It is also a movement that advocates gender equality for women and campaigns for women's rights and interests.

According to Maggie Humm and Rebecca Walker, the history of feminism can be divided into three waves. The first feminist wave was in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the second was in the 1960s and 1970s, and the third extends from the 1990s to the present. Feminist theory emerged from these feminist movements. It is manifest in a variety of disciplines such as feminist geography, feminist history and feminist literary criticism.

Feminism has altered predominant perspectives in a wide range of areas within Western society, ranging from culture to law. Feminist activists have campaigned for women's legal rights (rights of contract, property rights, voting rights); for women's right to bodily integrity and autonomy, for abortion rights, and for reproductive rights (including access to contraception and quality prenatal care); for protection of women and girls from domestic violence, sexual harassment and rape; for workplace rights, including maternity leave and equal pay; against misogyny; and against other forms of gender-specific discrimination against women. Although the terms "feminism" and "feminist" did not gain widespread use until the 1970s, they were already being used in the public parlance much earlier; for instance, Katherine Hepburn speaks of the "feminist movement" in the 1942 film Woman of the Year.

During much of its history, feminist movements and theories were lead predominantly by middle-class white women from Western Europe and North America. However, at least since Sojourner Truth's 1851 speech to American feminists, women of other races have proposed alternative feminisms. This trend accelerated in the 1960s with the Civil Rights movement in the United States and the collapse of European colonialism in Africa, the Caribbean, parts of Latin America and Southeast Asia. Since that time, women in former European colonies and the Third World have proposed "Post-colonial" and "Third World" feminisms. Some Postcolonial Feminists, such as Chandra Talpade Mohanty, are critical of Western feminism for being ethnocentric. Black feminists, such as Angela Davis and Alice Walker, share this view.

What does the modern feminist movemnt actually do?
Q. I'm not making fun, but the truth is the only time I hear anything about it on GWS. How can they help people if the masses are not aware of them? Would the movement work better if feminist embraced celebrity -- maybe a reality tv show. "Lesbians at Large" or "Funky Feminist Funhouse." Seriously, if feminism tried to made it way into people consciousness through entertainment (bring back Lilith Fair) wouldn't it help shed light on the movement?

A. At first i was ok with feminism -i mean they want to do something good that will actually help. But then most/some feminist now are not just asking for equality, they are just asking for patronization and want to be treated as special because they are women. I think doing those will make their reputation even worse

A. I'm intrigued by you're interested in feminist views on this? :) I am a feminist and was home schooled. My parents taught me and my four sisters in our own home/garden in nice weather and we received tailored, intimate tutoring. Home education isn't suitable for everyone but my sisters and I have all gone on to do extremely well both academically, socially and career-wise. I think the benefits of being taught at home range from one-to-one tutoring in a relaxed atmosphere to the absence of bullying and peer pressure. Many people worry that home schooled children miss out socially, but if they attend social meetings outside of home lessons then this isn't an issue. I went to ballet lessons, drama lessons, swimming lessons, pottery-making… [cont.]

A. Women were often seen as chattels of their fathers and then of their husbands. This view was partly what led to the events of the play. There are a number of study guides that can help you with this play. Most of them have quite a bit of good information. Have a look at these sites, and you should get some help with your work.
