Motivation is the activation or energization of goal-oriented behavior. Motivation is said to be intrinsic or extrinsic. The term is generally used for humans but, theoretically, it can also be used to describe the causes for animal behavior as well. This article refers to human motivation. According to various theories, motivation may be rooted in the basic need to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure, or it may include specific needs such as eating and resting, or a desired object, hobby, goal, state of being, ideal, or it may be attributed to less-apparent reasons such as altruism, selfishness, morality, or avoiding mortality. Conceptually, motivation should not be confused with either volition or optimism.

A. extrinsic motivation means that there is something motivating you to do it. (getting paid to go to work, for example) intrinsic motivation means that you are motivated from within yourself to do it. (participate in your favorite hobby or watch your favorite tv show) some theorists believe that when an extrinsic motivation is introduced to something you already had an intrinsic motivation to do, then the intrinsic motivation fades. (If you get a job doing your favorite hobby, you might start to not enjoy the hobby as much)

A. The term intrinsic denotes a property of some thing or action which is essential and specific to that thing or action, and which is wholly independent of any other object, action or consequence. A characteristic which is not essential or inherent is extrinsic. For example in biology, intrinsic effects originate from "inside" an organism or cell, such as an autoimmune disease or intrinsic immunity. An intrinsic property is a property that an object or a thing has of itself, independently of other things, including its context. An extrinsic (or relational) property is a property that depends on a thing's relationship with other things.
