Jerry A. Fodor's Language of Thought (LOT) hypothesis, or LOTH, states that cognition and cognitive processes are only 'remotely plausible' when expressed as computational in terms of representational systems. He uses empirical data drawn from linguistics and cognitive science to express internal representations through a philosophical vantage point. Like other languages, it contains its own syntax as well as semantics which have a causal effect on the properties of these mental representations. Fodor believed that there was merit in characterizing the representational system that one was 'provisionally committed' to, and that research strategies, if not necessarily true, at least contain an 'air of prima facie plausibility.' The hypothesis describes that thoughts are represented in a "language" (sometimes known as mentalese) which allows complex thoughts to be built up by combining simpler thoughts in various ways. It is clear from the biology of the brain that these mental representations are not present in the same way as symbols written on paper; rather, the LOT is supposed to exist at the cognitive level, the level of thoughts and concepts. For example the thought that "John is tall" is clearly composed of at least two sub-parts: the concept of John (the person), and the concept of tallness. The manner in which these two sub-parts are combined could be expressed in first-order predicate calculus.

What is the belief that language limits us to achieving higher thought?
Q. I don't know if it's a philosophy or anything like that but I am curious and would like to get more information on it. Thanks

A. Many things can not be said, and language will never be enough wide to describe higher thought, but you can feel and sense it, create it in your brains but you can not pronounce it.

Should English be the main language of the US ? I thought it was till I found out that?
Q. they were going to vote on a Bill 2 make it the official Language? Did U know that? And R they doing this so Spanish never becomes the Official Language ?Will we reach a point where spanish speaking people will out number English Speaking ?

A. If something isnt done, I see spanish right along side english and yes maybe even english the minority language in the country. In my opinon we are an english speaking nation and it should stay that way. The Netherlands official language is Dutch, Germany is german, France is french, so on and so forth. Why should America be any different when it comes to English. If they want to pass a bill I say go for it and cross fingers so that it does get passed.
