Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing fundamental questions (such as mysticism, myth, or the arts) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word "philosophy" comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία (philosophia), which literally means "love of wisdom".

Is an academic philosopher responsible for making himself understandable to non-philosophers and laymen?
Q. As a person who recently completed a PhD in philosophy, I have to explain and defend what I study on a regular basis---to friends, family, and sometimes strangers who have no clue what philosophy is. (I sometimes even need to defend my interests to fellow philosophers who do not study in my particular area of philosophy, but that is a different matter.) Is it important for a philosopher to be able to explain and defend himself to non-philosophers on a regular basis?

A. If you are going to say it to the ears of laymen, then yes you must sometimes explain. I'd say not all the time. It's contextual. If they happen to just "be there" when you're addressing a crowd that understands, it's not necessary, but do be polite about saying why you won't--or can't take the time--to explain. I have no doctorate, yet I am asked to explain things I've said, and the idea that what I've said is not understood to begin with amazes me. One friend used to get mad and say I was "talking over his head"---on purpose, no less!---and it did little to calm him when I said I have no idea which ideas you understand and which one's you don't, so don't accuse me of anything; just ask. But sometimes I don't have time to explain to one… [cont.]

What are some negative things about Plato the philosopher?
Q. I'm writing an essay about why Plato was a great philosopher but I need to write a counter argument, the opposing view of Plato. Can anyone give me any insight into what might have been negative about Plato or his philosophies?

A. I think the person who answered this question before me has summarized it nicely. However i would just like to add a few more points. Plato believed that society changes for the worse. And hence he believed that every effort must be made to arrest this change. This follows his theory of forms and ideas. Forms are perfrect unchanging entities in the 'Platonic World'. The entities in our ' real ' world and imperfect copies. He analyzed the history of Greek city states and developed his political philosophy on this belief. This attempt to arrest change in society led him build a model of a totalitarian state and hold it as the model for a perfect state. This is a society of rigid classes led by god like philosopher kings. The different… [cont.]

Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers:

  • The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.
  • Philosophy is not the owl of Minerva that takes flight after history has been realized in order to celebrate its happy ending; rather, philosophy is subjective proposition, desire, and praxis that are applied to the event.
  • What characterizes philosophy is this "step back" from actuality into possibility—the attitude best rendered by Adorno's and Horkheimer's motto quoted by Fredric Jameson: "Not Italy itself is given here, but the proof that it exists."
  • "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is – i.e. he must know his own nature (including his means of knowledge) and the nature of the universe in which he acts – i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance."
