Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing these questions (such as mysticism or mythology) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on reasoned argument. Philosophy comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία [philosophia], which literally translates to "love of wisdom".

who is the philosopher who said reality is created by the devil to fool mankind?
Q. I've read it in a book that an ancient philosopher said that reality is created by the devil to fool people into believing what is illusionary is real by manipulating their 5 senses. But the philosopher said a soul however, exist because one needs to be consciously existing to be fooled by the devil, if the self is non existing, there is nothing to fool. does anyone know the name of this philosopher?? I forgot his name and also forgot the source I got it from. Thanks!

A. That was a hypothesis of Rene Descartes. Not an "ancient" philosopher, but an early modern.

Q. Why does Plato advocate for the system of philosopher-kings for his Kallipolis? Why does Plato advocate for the system of philosopher-kings for his Kallipolis? How does it relate to his treatment of Socrates in the Apology and the Crito? Any thoughts on this? I am struggling with this question and i will really thank you for your thoughts on it.

A. He was an elitist. Plato did not think that the common man would "stand for" the rule of philosophers who merely sought to see to that man's own best interests. Plato (perhaps correctly) felt that not only would the common man not understand the whole philosophy thing, but would likely revolt against it out of ignorance. Consequently, a ruler with such a mandate, ability and understanding must simply be installed.

Do you know the philosopher/philosophy of the following system of belief?
Q. I am doing an essay for school on philosophy, and I have chosen a specific belief system, however I do not know which philosopher/what philosophy this is. One of my best friends told me about it, and the jist of it is: Before we are born we choose the lessons we want to learn in our lifetime, and from our choices a higher being delegates what specific experiences we will go through in order to learn those lessons. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers:

Sourced

  • The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.
  • Philosophy is not the owl of Minerva that takes flight after history has been realized in order to celebrate its happy ending; rather, philosophy is subjective proposition, desire, and praxis that are applied to the event.
  • What characterizes philosophy is this "step back" from actuality into possibility—the attitude best rendered by Adorno's and Horkheimer's motto quoted by Fredric Jameson: "Not Italy itself is given here, but the proof that it exists."
  • "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is – i.e. he must know his own nature (including his means of knowledge) and the nature of the universe in which he acts – i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance." Ayn Rand, "Philosophy, who needs it?".
