What causes a high platelet count and anemia?
Q. My son has had a high platelet count and anemia for years. We have him tested twice a year now, but no one can give me a diagnosis, cause, or reason to keep testing him. They just say he does not need to get dehydrated. Has Anyone ever heard of this?

A. Thrombocythemia In thrombocythemia, too many platelets are produced. Excessive clotting or bleeding may result. In the bone marrow, the cells that become platelets increase in number (proliferate). Why the cells proliferate is unknown. But the result is too many platelets. If there are too many platelets, blood clots can form spontaneously. Clots may block blood vessels, especially small ones. Sometimes in thrombocythemia, platelets do not function normally. Then, excessive bleeding may occur. Causes Usually, no cause can be identified. Other disorders that can cause thrombocythemia include iron deficiency anemia, cancer that has spread (metastasized), leukemia, lymphoma, polycythemia vera, and rheumatoid arthritis. This is the… [cont.]

What does a slightly low blood platelet count mean?
Q. The doc said my platelet count was below normal, but just slightly. Should I be concerned? What can I do to increase the count?
Asked by newageinsights - Fri Oct 10 18:09:39 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It doesn't mean anything on its own - its only a concern if you have additional symptoms caused by low platelets. It usually takes extremely low platelet counts to cause noticeable problems, so its very unlikely that there is anything actually wrong. There isn't anything you can do directly to increase platelets - the number of platelets is an internal balancing act between the rate of platelet production by the bone marrow and the rate that they are destroyed by the immune system. Its almost impossible to speed up platelet production in the bone marrow, but a variety of drugs and "natural" remedies can increase platelet numbers by suppressing the immune system, but a depressed immune system is a much greater health problem than… [cont.]

A. this website will tell you all about platelet counts, basically they are the primary sources of your blood's ability to clot. Early symptoms include bruising easily, nose bleeds and slow wound healing, the website will tell you about severe thrombocytopenia, or low platelets.

How low does a platelet count have to be before it can cause death in an adult?
Q. My platelet count dropped from 90,000 to 50,000 in an hour while I was pregnant which precipitated my baby's premature birth via emergency c-section. I am wondering how close I was to dying.
Asked by Micro-preemiemom - Sat Jun 16 04:58:39 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A low platelet count itself does not cause death...bleeding does. The lower your platelet count, the more likely you are to bleed. At the 50,000 level, you were at risk of excess bleeding with surgery. At the 10,000 level, you can have major bleeding without any kind of trauma like surgery. However, not everybody with those low levels will have bleeding. Even major bleeding does not always cause death. So there is no way of telling you exactly how close you were. It may be that your doctor was also concerned about *why* your platelet count was dropping. Maybe you had pre-eclampsia with HELLP syndrome, which can be quite serious for a lot of reasons (see the second source for details). The main treatment is to deliver the baby as… [cont.]

A. A slightly elevated platelet count is not a cause for worry. Elevated platelets, along with other blood test abnormalities, could be an indication of a disease process. "An elevated platelet count is known as thrombocytosis. The laboratory where the test was performed will be able to tell whether a platelet count of 420,000 represents an elevated value for this laboratory. An elevated platelet count can be observed in people without significant medical problems. Mild to moderately elevated platelet counts are commonly seen when chronic inflammation is present. In other cases a high platelet count can signal a more serious blood problem known as a myeloproliferative disorder (abnormal growth of blood cell elements within the bone marrow).… [cont.]

What would cause elevated platelet count in a 13-month old?
Q. My 13-month old son just had some routine blood work done and the the pediatrician's office called to say that there was evidence of an elevated platelet count (not leukocytes or anything else - just platelets). We're having that part of the test redone to check for errors and it might just be that, but what are the other possabilities? - he has not suffered any notable physical injuries and does not show irregular bruising. - he has had a mild cold which began about 2 days before the initial blood test. - he has none of the other symptoms of Kawasaki's disease (fever, red eyes, etc). A. You don't mention how much the count is elevated, or if your son has any apparent symptoms. Its not unusual for an individual to have some blood parameter fall outside the norms, so if the RBC count is slightly elevated - there may be nothing wrong. So, I would assume that nothing is wrong unless there are some signs that your son has some sort of problem caused by the elevated RBCs. I have been very healthy my whole life and there several parameters in my blood counts that are always outside the norms - apparently, those norms are not normal for everyone.

What does a high platelet count mean?
Q. I have been donating platelets for three years. My count has always been high (the lowest was around 350,000). Today when I went, my platelet count was 453,000. Platelet donors over 450,000 get deferred from donating again for four weeks. Is my count too high? Does this mean I should get checked out for some kind of disorder? Is it possible for my body to produce more platelets b/c I donate about every two weeks and it is anticipating the need?

A. First of all, a high platelet count is known as thrombocytosis. It can be caused by many different reasons such as an infection, inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and other conditions like chronic myelogenous leukemia, Hyposplenism, Hemorrhage and/or iron deficiency. Your platelet count is just out of the normal range of 150,000 and 450,000 per mm (or micro litre) and it's important to note that deviation does not necessary imply any form of disease, but I would recommend getting this checked with your doctor. To put it in laymens terms, high platelets create thicker blood. If you have too many platelets (750,000 or 1,000,000) you have a much higher risk of blood clotting conditions like Thrombosis. I would recommend getting… [cont.]

What causes high platelet count (525 or so) and low white blood cell count (don t know the number)?
Q. I have a high platelet count and low WBC count. Any ideas?
Asked by JennaH - Fri Feb 8 12:37:49 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually if one type of cell count is high, another is low, since the proportions of both cell types in the blood sample change if there is a change in either cell type. In your case, the white blood cells may appear low simply because the blood volume that would normally contain more white blood cells is occupied by platelets. If your white blood cell count is just slightly below normal, then its a safe bet that the aberration is due to the platelet count. High platelet counts often occur without any apparent reason (called essential thrombocythemia), but they can also occur from conditions like polycythemia vera or myelogenous leukemia - docs often check for signs of these other possible causes after finding a high platelet count. … [cont.]

A. a low platelet count just means that your body doesnt produce a lot of platelets or white blood cells. it doesn't mean that your dyeing or anything it just means that your body isnt producing enough WBC's. Or your body just may be using all your WBC's to fight infections, like pneumonia. just try to stay relaxed until you hear from your doctor. you are not goin to have some rare skin disease and die. hope this helps!!!

A. platelets stop blood from rushing out of the body when you get cut necrophilia is a white blood cell which means that she is having high platelets but low white cells which aren't good if she doesn't get the right amount she could end up having a very high risk for a infection [if cut] and ora disease because the white blood cells won't be able ti fight of the invaders to the body but if she gets cut she has a low risk of bleeding to death[ hemophilia] so i would recommend blood transfusion to get the balance or the lesion might be messing with her immune system causing her lack to create the white cells and more of the platelets so remedy find out what the lesion is and fix it from there or bloodtrasnfusion but i have a very good felling… [cont.]
