A. the best thing to do is to make an appointment with her and ask her about it. there are so many causes of an elevated platelet count, that all I would be giving you is an exhaustive list without any indication as to which one it is likely to be because you havent exactly loaded the question with information; signs, symptoms, why you had the blood test in the first place!! go back and speak to her about it. as for the aspirin, it is not directly the aspirin that is causing the abnormality, but aspirin works agains platelets to thin the blood. I have no idea why she thinks your on aspirin when your not. in any case you should stay off it because, there is a possibility that your platelets are not working as they should and by taking aspirin… [cont.]

A. A normal platelet count in a healthy person is between 150,000 and 400,000 per mm of blood (150 400 x 109/L). 95% of healthy people will have platelet counts in this range. Some will have statistically abnormal platelet counts while having no abnormality, although the likelihood increases if the platelet count is either very low or very high. Some further reading on high platelets is on:-

A. this website will tell you all about platelet counts, basically they are the primary sources of your blood's ability to clot. Early symptoms include bruising easily, nose bleeds and slow wound healing, the website will tell you about severe thrombocytopenia, or low platelets.

A. A slightly elevated platelet count is not a cause for worry. Elevated platelets, along with other blood test abnormalities, could be an indication of a disease process. "An elevated platelet count is known as thrombocytosis. The laboratory where the test was performed will be able to tell whether a platelet count of 420,000 represents an elevated value for this laboratory. An elevated platelet count can be observed in people without significant medical problems. Mild to moderately elevated platelet counts are commonly seen when chronic inflammation is present. In other cases a high platelet count can signal a more serious blood problem known as a myeloproliferative disorder (abnormal growth of blood cell elements within the bone marrow).… [cont.]

My 13-month old son just had some routine blood work done and the the pediatrician's office called to say that there was evidence of an elevated platelet count (not leukocytes or anything else - just platelets). We're having that part of the test redone to check for errors and it might just be that, but what are the other possabilities? - he has not suffered any notable physical injuries and does not show irregular bruising. - he has had a mild cold which began about 2 days before the initial blood test. - he has none of the other symptoms of Kawasaki's disease (fever, red eyes, etc). A. You don't mention how much the count is elevated, or if your son has any apparent symptoms. Its not unusual for an individual to have some blood parameter fall outside the norms, so if the RBC count is slightly elevated - there may be nothing wrong. So, I would assume that nothing is wrong unless there are some signs that your son has some sort of problem caused by the elevated RBCs. I have been very healthy my whole life and there several parameters in my blood counts that are always outside the norms - apparently, those norms are not normal for everyone.

What does a high platelet count mean?
Q. I have been donating platelets for three years. My count has always been high (the lowest was around 350,000). Today when I went, my platelet count was 453,000. Platelet donors over 450,000 get deferred from donating again for four weeks. Is my count too high? Does this mean I should get checked out for some kind of disorder? Is it possible for my body to produce more platelets b/c I donate about every two weeks and it is anticipating the need?

A. First of all, a high platelet count is known as thrombocytosis. It can be caused by many different reasons such as an infection, inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and other conditions like chronic myelogenous leukemia, Hyposplenism, Hemorrhage and/or iron deficiency. Your platelet count is just out of the normal range of 150,000 and 450,000 per mm (or micro litre) and it's important to note that deviation does not necessary imply any form of disease, but I would recommend getting this checked with your doctor. To put it in laymens terms, high platelets create thicker blood. If you have too many platelets (750,000 or 1,000,000) you have a much higher risk of blood clotting conditions like Thrombosis. I would recommend getting… [cont.]

A. 150-400 (150,000-400,000) If for any reason your blood platelet count falls below normal, this is called thrombocytopenia. It often occurs as a result of a separate disorder, such as leukemia or an immune system malfunction, or as a medication side effect. Complications may range from none to severe bleeding. If u have too many it can cause clots to form when you don't need them (thrombosis).

what does it mean if i have a low blood platelet count ?
Q. according to recent blood-test results, my platelet count was 149 , below the accepted 'normal' range of 160-400 k/cu mm . the reading a year prior was 166 , so it dropped during the last year, assuming the blood test results are accurate and reliable.
Asked by tsx500 - Sat Jun 6 00:28:09 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Is anything else with the blood count off? Going from 166 to 149 over a year is not a significant drop. Many labs use a normal value at the lower end to be 150. Unless you have other abnormalities, I would ask your doctor about it, but I problably wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Keep in mind that for a lab to determine a "normal" range, they take a group of "normal" persons and take the middle 95% as the normal range. So by definition, normal will have some outliers at the fringe of the range. You sound like YOUR normal is at the lower end of that range. Edit: bleeding problems from a low platelet count do not occur until the count is less than 50K, and spontaneous bleeding will occur if less than 20k. There is no evidence that… [cont.]

Asked by Koter Boters loves duke n koty - Mon Sep 21 21:08:21 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Koter - Low blood platelet count is known as "thrombocytopenia." Thrombocytes is another word for platelets while "-penia" means reduced or low numbers. Normally, you have anywhere from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of circulating blood. Because each platelet lives only about 10 days, your platelet supply is continually renewed by production of new platelets from your bone marrow. If for any reason your blood platelet count falls below normal, the condition is called thrombocytopenia. Complications may range from none at all to severe bleeding. The risk of bleeding increases as the number of platelets decreases. The greatest risk is when platelet count falls very low below 10,000 platelets per microliter. At this… [cont.]

A. 1) Platelet transfusion if she is eligible for it (may not be due to shortage of blood donations) 2) Getting rid of a pre-existing H.Pylori infection, if she has one. 3) Increasing vitamin b12 and folic acid in the diet. 4) Quit taking blood thinners such as heparin, warfarin etc if she is on any (must be done under doctor's jurisdiction as this can be very dangerous!)

Low platelet count and low white blood cell count?
Q. I recently had blood work done by an immunologist and when the results came back my platelets and white blood cells were both low. I had it redrawn today to make sure it wasn't a fluke. What could be the cause of both low platelet counts and white blood cell counts? The only other abnormal reading was that my IgM levels were slightly low, with all other Ig levels (IgA, IgG, IgE) being within a normal range. Any idea what could cause those readings? Thanks for your help!

A. platelets stop blood from rushing out of the body when you get cut necrophilia is a white blood cell which means that she is having high platelets but low white cells which aren't good if she doesn't get the right amount she could end up having a very high risk for a infection [if cut] and ora disease because the white blood cells won't be able ti fight of the invaders to the body but if she gets cut she has a low risk of bleeding to death[ hemophilia] so i would recommend blood transfusion to get the balance or the lesion might be messing with her immune system causing her lack to create the white cells and more of the platelets so remedy find out what the lesion is and fix it from there or bloodtrasnfusion but i have a very good felling… [cont.]
