Q. pieces of my soul strewn on the floor shards of memories, blades of words cutting my skin, i am lost we are all lost searching for someone to search for us helpless and pathetic where are we? never to be found we are disoriented and high high on inanity, low on profoundness where are we? where will we be? is this a good poem?? can you interpret its meaning??

A. the same poem can have a completely different meaning for different people. if you write one thing, someone might interpret it as something other than what you meant. to them, it might jog memories or feelings that you never thought of when you wrote it. this poem to me is about a person who is pretty lost and confused. they know they are lost and need help and they are wondering about what is going to happen to them in the future. i think it is really good but the rhythm of the 7th line is a bit funny and could use a bit of work. still - i really like it.

A. Hi Mandy... I feel your pain throughout and the sense of betrayal and loss as well. I truly think that you are evolving... I would really think about writing short stories... you have the passion and emotion needed to write something people could read and relate to. I think you should consider this and give it a try...there are limitless possibilities

What Shakespeare poem would you recommend me to read?
Q. I am planning on writing a book report on a biography of the poet William Shakespeare. For the report, I need to state my favorite poem written by that poet. But, unfortunately, there are so many poems written by him, and I am unable to comprehend and read them all. Are there any Shakespeare fans out there? Could you recommend a few poems for me? I like poems about loss, death, or some sort of sorrow. I feel they are most favorable.

A. I suggest you go with one of the sonnets. They are short and to the point. Sonnet #30 is a good one. I interpret as someone thinking about all the bad things that have happened to them, sinking more and more into a depression, but then at the end he remembers a dear friend and feels better. Or, you could go with Sonnet #150. It seems to be saying "Why do I love you? You are such a b*stard. Where do you get this power over me? Since you are so nasty, and I am better than you, you should really love me. Why don't you?" The sonnets can mean a lot of different things depending on how you interpret them, which is fun.

A. Poetic Form: Blues Poem One of the most popular forms of American poetry, the blues poem stems from the African American oral tradition and the musical tradition of the blues. A blues poem typically takes on themes such as struggle, despair, and sex. It often (but not necessarily) follows a form, in which a statement is made in the first line, a variation is given in the second line, and an ironic alternative is declared in the third line. African-American writer Ralph Ellison said that although the blues are often about struggle and depression, they are also full of determination to overcome difficulty "through sheer toughness of spirit." What is a good poem to use for an American Dream speech about not living for yourself/helping others?
Q. I'm doing a speech about not living for yourself. I have a poem in mind...The World and I by Laura Riding. I'm not sure if it fits, though. Are there any other poems I could use?
Asked by Dannnnnielle - Mon Apr 13 20:36:56 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Corinthians is not a poem. Well, an American poet would probably be best so I recommend Googling the greats: Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost etc. Having read the Laura Riding poem, it's a great poem but I don't know if it totally fits the topic of helping others. If you wanted a helping others poem with a bit of a difference, may I suggest 'Shovelling Snow With Buddha' by Billy Collins? It's a little bit off the wall but a great poem -- plus, Billy Collins is one of the greatest living US poets and a former poet laureate. It'll be something a bit different to the norm, the old greats... there's a copy here: Hope that helps!

How can I write a poem for english class?
Q. I hate having my poems evaluated. I mean, it's not that I don't like writing poetry, but I have such a hard time actually showing emotion. And like, that's what poetry is all about, right? I've had a lot of difficult things happen to me recently, but nothing that I could share with my english teacher, and definitely not my class. So is it possible to write a good poem without the true emotion? How?
Asked by Tiffany M - Tue Apr 28 16:57:39 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Try writing some poems - from the standpoint of being an observer. Tell a story of what is going on - what you see happening - maybe what you feel about it. Emotions will tend to leak in - maybe that will be a good start. Good luck

How can I separate a prologue from the poem?
Q. I hadn't intended too, but I somehow ended up creating a sort of preface for a poem I wrote. It's out of place with the rest of the poem as in it's pure imagery whilst the rest of the poem is more emotional. It all has the same theme, but doesn't work cohesively. Any suggestions?

A. Why not re write it in a more emotional context, or leave it out and adapt it to use with another poem, or create a new poem from it. I've read your work before, you should have no problem making the changes you think are right for the piece.

Where can I find an American poem that is related to Nathaniel Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter?
Q. It has to be a real poem, not just an unofficial, made-up poem. Thanks! It does not have to necessarily relate directly to the storyline of Scarlet Letter. It may relate to a common theme or one of the characters in the story.

A. Read "The Touch" by Anne Sexton, I think it clearly relates to The Scarlett Letter. (there are others that do as well, but I can't find them online, so if you have time, maybe borrow/buy the book). Also, one of the reviews on the back cover compares Anne's voice to that of Hester Prynne.

What is the difference between a poem and a set of lyrics?
Q. Well I have been writing lyrics for a long time now, the thing is I don't exactly like singing and I'm not very good with instruments. I was wondering if I could consider these lyrics poems if I wanted to? So I would like to know if there is a difference between a set of lyrics and a poem, and if so, what is it? Thanks!

A. There's no real dividing difference. Most lyrics are written in 2nd person present tense, while a lot of poems are written in 1st person past tense. Rhymed verse poems follow a specific repetitive meter, while lyrics do not have to. Most lyrics rhyme, but are written to fit musical phrases. Lyrics typically need less imagery than poems and convey emotions more directly. Poems can be turned into lyrics (a lot of Led Zeppelin songs are actually poems). Poems can be called lyrics and lyrics can be called poems. In rhymed verse poetry, the meter/rhythm of the words creates a musical effect.
