Why are professional ethics so important in journalism and the legal world?
Q. I actually want to compare, not contrast, the importance of professional ethics in journalism and for lawyers.
Asked by Brandy W - Fri Jan 18 21:02:20 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Lawyers are held to a code of ethics by law (not that they necessarily follow it). Whereas with journalists it's more like a suggested set of guidelines. These days it's very rare to find any kind of ethics in Journalism.

A. It is not clear what professional ethics you are concerned With. However, Directors have a fiduciary duty which burdens them with a duty of care, duty to protect corporation property, duty of loyalty. The duties break down into several sub duties. Trustee have a duty to administrate a trust with a duty of care, skill, and caution that a reasonable, prudent person would treat their property.

A. One of the principal roles of the Social Worker is to advocate on behalf of their client. This is not diametrically opposed to Political Activism, there are many avenues to advocate in the interest of the client, some Social Workers become involved in Policy Making, others become involved in the creation of legistation and others may opt to become political activists. The traditional approach of working through the beauracracy and eventually, hopefully achieving some kind of benefit for the client is being re-evaluated by younger Social Workers. In fact when I studied most of my classmates went on to become policy makers or did additional degrees in related fields such as law, project management, etc. I myself not being inclined to make a… [cont.]

A. I'm sure people have different opinions on this subject, but to me ethics should be the same at personal and professional levels, but behaviour should comply with the accepted standards of the situation. If your profession calls for formal dress and formal behaviour, then you'd better be formal. You can wear a t-shirt and jeans and curse a blue streak after work. A job should not require you to adopt a set of ethics that is contrary to the ones you possess, if it does, you may be in the wrong line of work.

A. Ethics of any sort is a description of what is defensible in the actions of one or more men toward others. All people do things they know to be unethical, but they do it thinking they can defend their actions. Sometimes they can. When they do, they refine ethics. Sometimes that refinement is macro; sometimes it may never be seen used again, a one-time action caused by unusual circumstances.

A. The Rules of Professional Conduct, which varies by jurisdiction, generally prohibits a lawyer from advancing an unmeritorious argument in court, except where the lawyer is defending a criminal defendant, who is constitutionally entitled to have the government prove every element of the case against him/her beyond all reasonable doubt. Just because a case is ultimately a lost cause, does not mean that an attorney cannot make a good faith argument to defend his/her client's interests. It is only the plaintiff/petitioner's attorney in a civil action who is ethically not permitted to advance a case where there is no meritorious good faith legal argument. And, as a practical matter, there are very few circumstances where some good faith… [cont.]

A. Professional knowledge, abilities, values, and ethics impact every area of life, not just business. For true success, these characteristics must be in place all the time, and in every situation, at home, and in public. Without these, success is limited, temporary, or non-existent. We reap what we sow. This is a law that everything is in subjection to. Hope this helped you.

A. because young children are sponges. they observe everything around them and they look up to the adults that take care of them, which included ECE teachers. if a teacher acts one way in the classroom and another way outside of the classroom it is asking for trouble. if you see a child in your class outside of school and you are wearing trashy clothing, using foul language, intoxicated, etc. the children will remember that. you do not want a 4 year old going home pretending to be Miss Sandy when Miss Sandy was wearing disgusting clothing. a parent also wants to know they are leaving their YOUNG children with someone who is responsable enough to care for them. would you leave your child wiht someone who may have been out all night the… [cont.]

Asked by barbroxie54 - Tue Nov 14 20:23:27 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You could look at the American Bar Associations Model Rules of Professional Responsibility [See link below]. The rules are divided generally by subject and coverage, and make sure to read the Committee Comments for the applicable rules as they given further guidence. however, please note that these rules are only model rules, and may not be the exact rules of your jurisdiction. While many states have adopted the model rules or modifications of the model rules, there are some significant differences depending on jurisdiction. You might look at the State Bar website for your state/jurisdiction and see if they have posted their Rules of Professional Responsibility.
